Leader Command revision suggestion

Post by Granicus Gaugamela on Wed Sep 03, 2014 11:00 pm

Gents,

along with thoughts on Large Units I would like feedback on the following house rule

Leader Command value

Rather than the current mechanism where a leader gives a uniform +1 to tests leaders will give a bonus of half of their command rating, rounded down.

Leader value 0,1 Bonus = 0
Leader value 2,3 Bonus = 1
Leader value 4 Bonus = 2

Or would it be better to round up?

Leader value 0 Bonus = 0
Leader value 1,2 Bonus = 1
Leader value 3,4 Bonus = 2

a roll of 1 is always a fail, 6 is always a pass as per current rules.

Ultimately I'm looking for better value for money for better commanders.

These revised modifiers to apply to both discipline and cohesion tests.

I like the idea and would vote for round up.

Why? What does it represent?

It seems like unnecessary complication to me.

The leadership value gives you multiple rallies. Having a nob in the unit/group gives you a morale boost. I don't think the two are synonymous.

Seems to me that morale and rallies are very much related even if not synonymous.
An added level of detail is no bad thing if the players enjoy it- this is after all only suggested a a house rule.

I agree with Tarty. The better commanders get more dice to rally troops at the beginning of the turn. A huge advantage.

It represents that a Genius leader has a better effect than a Poor leader whereas the current +1 makes no such distinction.

Don't think the game needs it but if it was used then I tend to agree with rounding up. I have never used a Genius Leader though.

Cheers,

Better leadership is represented by better rallying. Good generals are much better at keeping their troops in order - and that is the heart of Impetus.

Better leadership doesn't necessarily result in troops shrugging off losses and bad results. A simple +1 for there being a boss around is appropriate IMO.

A genius leader is excellent at staffwork and keeping cohesion but may well be hated by the troops and thus have minimal morale boosting effect on them - assuming being good at one is inherently good for the other is not a good thing.

If there were to be a gradient in morale boost then it should be separate to leadership as the two are not the same.

Don't get me wrong, I think the system of command value, leadership and inspiration could do with an overhaul but this is not the way forward IMO, it is clunky and fails to address the critical distinction between the concepts.
