Basing in Baroque

Post by Admin on Mon May 19, 2014 3:28 pm

This will be the basing in Baroque.

BASE WIDTH
25-28mm: 18cm
15-20mm: 12cm
10mm: 8cm (or as an alternative 6cm)
6mm: 6cm (or as an alternative 8cm)
All troops have the same frontage with the exception of Artillery that is 6cm for 28mm, 4cm for 20-15-10cm and 2 or 3cm for 6mm.

DEPTH
Suggested depth for 15mm and 20mm
ECW-TYW P&M (Pike&Muskets): 4 to 6cm
Tercios: 9 to 12cm
Skirmishers and Late 17th Cent. P&M: 3 to 4cm
Irregular foot (e.g. highlanders): 4 to 6cm
Horse: 4 to 6cm
Dragoons: 3/4cm or 8cm (if horse holders are depicted)
Artillery: 4cm (or more if required)

Suggested depth for 25-28mm
ECW-TYW P&M (Pike&Muskets): 6 to 8cm
Tercios: 12 to 18cm
Skirmishers and Late 17th Cent. P&M: 4 to 6cm
Irregular foot (e.g. highlanders): 6cm
Horse: 6 to 8cm
Dragoons: 4/6cm or 8cm (if horse holders are depicted)

10 and 5/6mm
We advise you to base 10mm or 5/6mm miniatures using half the dimensions shown for 25/28mm. During play use the measurements used for 15mm.
You may prefer to use 15mm base sizes instead.

Please note. For 28mm (but can work also for other scale) I suggest to split Units into 3 bases.
Personally I'm building my ECW/30YW armies all on 6x6cm bases. This will allow me to move musketeers from a Pike and Shot unit to a Cavalry and Shot units or change the pike/command bases and convert the armies.

Have to think about this; some of my stuff will be drifting across from my Impetus armies. It's not bad if stuff is DBx based already, just bigger sabot bases, but a problem if they're on genuine impetus bases

well, contrary to Impetus, Baroque will use Base Width as unit of measure for distances and movement. So no "U", but BW.
This means that any basing, if both armies have the same, are ok.

If you have 15mm armies on 8cm front as an alternative just prepare a single figure (a mounted officer, for example) on a 4x4 base, Put it close to the Unit, so the Unit reaches the 12cm frontage. And use it also to indicate the Unit in disorder (turn the figure)

That's good you will be using BW for measurement as all my 28mm infantry units are 3 bases 80x60cm for a 24cm frontage which is larger then the recommended.

Looking forward to Baroque. I have the same issue as Jim as will be using some pike on the impetus normal 12 cm width. I could add a sleeve of shot each side to make a 18cm width. Or maybe the double width of 24cm works best for using impetus based figures. Would like to re-use some cavalry so two 12 cm units would work.

I am mainly looking at French wars of religion period for baroque so quite early ...

Hi
I'm a bit confused here.
Base width for 25mm is 18cm.
Underneath it then says all troops have a 12cm frontage?

still completing the Italian version that is a good stage anyway (say 90%). Translation will take time and can start only when the Italian version is completed. Difficult to say.
Still looking for a nice pic for the cover, anyway.

cheers. how much larger than the basic lists will the armies be? 4-5 more bases?

i also note that the beta impetus vs. books can see a lot of movement in the lists. any lists we should be cautious about investing too much time and money in just yet?

well hard to say at this stage what will be changed from betas to official lists. All betas will be revised with the release of the rules, so players can have a selection of playable armies without waiting the release of Extra Baroque 1.

In general official list will include some extra special rules in some cases.

Troops types in this period are more limited and it is easy to recycle into different armies.

Will the Great Northern War still be covered by Baroque as in the Betalists?

I will make the betas. The only thing I have todecide ifsome additional rules are required for the period, but I think will not.
I will do so for the later period probably

Re: Basing in Baroque

Post by Zktaa on Tue Feb 03, 2015 3:58 am

Hello.
So given the size of bases regarding 15mm, is there any freeform method for basing representation?
Number of figures/models per base etc is up to the user? No matter pike to shot proportions etc??
There being a wide range of base depths within troop categories, I'm assuming base depth options are to suit personal taste, figure size, nominal formations etc and have no bearing on the game, provided the unit frontages are constant and representation is obvious?

Hello again.
Another question.
Commanders...aka "Generals"... is there a distinction of general type for Baroque, as in Ancient Impetus?

you can do that, no problem.
All measurements are based on frontage so if both armies are based the same there is no problem.

And in case you shoudl meet an opponent with "regular" basing, you can add a small base on the flank of the unit you can also use as marker (disorder, opportunity etc)

There is an article anyway on Impetus Magazine about basing and some anticipations on Baroque.

I was thinking about troops the other day, and I've decided to try playing Baroque with Billy Bones lovely ECW paper troops. They are very inexpensive. You can buy them through Wargames Vault. You get downloadable files and can then print out as many of each type as you need.

Since the paper troops are done in a nifty steel-engraving style, it gives a nice period feel to it. He also has files for all sorts of terrain in the same artistic style, so you can get buildings, roads, walls, trees, bridges, etc. Nice stuff, and looks good when printed on a parchment color paper.

Just thought I'd throw that out for folks to think about.

here's one other question: What about using 54mm troops? What type of basing convention would you consider?

I ask this because I've also seen some neat 54mm plastic ECW minis and had briefly considered picking some up.
