A doubt that has been growing in our group:

Can a unit both shoot AND charge? Or only one of those two actions?

Yes. The unit can move and shoot or shoot and then move. In the first case the unit deducts one die from its total firing dice (with a few minor exceptions such as javelin.) In the later case a unit can hold back one or more dice when it fires so that it can move afterwards.

So CM VBU5 firing at an infantry unit at 10U would normally have 5 dice to fire if it started its turn stationary. But suppose it wanted to fire and then charge. It would deduct one die from the firing and then charge. If it fired its full allotment then it could not move after firing.

In the case of javelin armed infantry there is no penalty to fire and move once so it is very good tactic to fire at the enemy, see what happens and then if the situation looks good charge in.

It all came out after some VBU5 & 6 guilmans making some spetacular shooting and then charging!

It's really important to screen own main line with light troops.

Key thing to remember though is there is no group shooting. If a unit wants to shoot then it is "one out" and must complete its actions prior to the next unit starting.
