Basing Depth

Post by Gaius Cassius on Thu Jun 25, 2015 9:02 pm

I have generally based my FP on 5cm bases. I did this to give me a slightly bigger surface for dioramic effect and also I felt it protected my figures a bit better. In the past I didn't feel worried about this since Lorenzo has always been relaxed about slightly deeper bases and the rules allow 4cm or 6cm depth for FP basing. From a rules perspective, it was slightly to my detriment to have the deeper bases (exiting from disordering terrain specifically.) With the recent changes to covered flanks having a bit more base depth could occasionally be to my advantage. Would others have problem facing my FP on 5cm bases? Would this disqualify my figures from playing in Impetus tournaments? Honest feedback is most appreciated.

No not at all. Anything from 40-60mm is acceptable. Base depth is way out ( far too deep ) anyway when it comes to representing troops on the war-games table no matter what your playing. Would be a bit rich to pull you up on something like that.

This should be ok since it is below the maximum allowed. I don´t see an issue with 5cm.

Personally I like the option that you have the option for FP for two different base sizes. I prefer the smaller option for large units consisting of two bases.

You can illustrate with 6cm or 5cm that an FP is kind of medium and looks like FL but is heavier armoured in contrast to e.g. dismounted knights with only a few models on the smallest base.

Initially the multi depth thing being different than other rules through me for a loop, but I've accepted it. I vacillate a bit between which is preferred, and some how suspect a unit of similar strength based in a smaller area could be slightly better, yet enjoy using the larger base size for presentation purposes. Don't recall seeing 5cm deep bases on a table top in my area, yet the rules allow for 4cm to 6cm depth, so I'd say 5cm fits with in that depth, and thus ok.

For consistency's sake, I base all my foot on 60mm deep bases. I like having the extra room for terrain, and especially for lights and skirmish troops, it gives me a little more room to shake them out and add some "animation" to them.

I also like how, with my Macedonian pike, the 80mm deep bases add enough depth to the large formation so that it "looks" larger.

FWIW, I use a minimum of 80mm for cavalry, and illustrate the type of unit (light, medium or heavy) by the number of miniatures on the base. 3, 4, or 5 respectively.

That's just my 2-cent's worth anyway. I have no problem with anyone's choice of base depth, as long as it's more or less within the suggested parameters.

The pike are on 80mm, and not 60mm, is that an exception for FP that I missed? Don't have the rules in front of me at the moment.

As long as you are not gaining an advantage why not - anything between the two is fine, more than 60mm is not.

But tbh I wouldnt worry unless someone was deliberately abusing the system
