How do you calculate VD?

Post by dave8365 on Fri Oct 16, 2015 4:00 am

I've been drafting some lists, but am not quite sure how to calculate the correct VD for a unit. The BIF fantasy list gives some indication, based on various abilities, but I'm not sure how that translates into non-fantasy Impetus.

I could not find it in any of the other references to the Impetus point system...

Thanks,
Dave

I don't think there is a set way. From memory of discussions years ago the VD of a unit is based on its importance to that army. The majority will be 2, important units will be 3, and less important units 1.
Hence a Gallic warband is 2 in the Gallic lists but only 1 when a mercenary in other lists.

the BIF List says this:

*********
The presence of new Abilities, allowing to perform historically impossible actions made us rethink the way to determinate the units’ VD.
The VD value has to be allocated in the following way:
• VD1 is given to all units with VBU 3 or less and not more than 1 Ability.
• VD2 is given to all units with VBU 4 or more with no more than 1 Ability or to those with VBU 3 or less and at least 2 Abilities.
• VD3 is given to all units with at least VD 4 or more and 2 Abilities and from VBU 6 upward.
• VD4 is given to all units which include the General or Characters, being those within an unit or standing alone.

*********

Since the only "ability" referenced in BIF that also appears in Impetus is "impetuous", I have broken the VD determination as follows:

• VD1 is given to all units with VBU 3 or less, regardless of I, or VBU of 4 with I of 0 and D of C;
• VD2 is given to all units with VBU 4 or 5 with an I of 1 or 0 and a D of B or A;
• VD3 is given to all units with at least VD 6 or more, and any Impetuous troops.

I use the guidelines below, taken from an old points values spreadsheet:

rate VD=3: Units with the generals, 90% of medieval knights and core troops like legionaries or veterans
rate VD=2 most troops with a VBU >= 5 (if not VD=3)
rate VD=1 most light troops and in general troops with VBU up to 3.

But I also take in account the importance of the unit to the army, the impetus value and the combined VBU+I.
