General lost - consequences

Post by Granicus Gaugamela on Fri Nov 06, 2015 7:57 am

Big game on Wednesday, one of the old chestnuts came up. What is/are the effects when a General is lost but the troops keep fighting on?

Initiative:
Does the command maintain the bonus level of the General?
Does the initiative bonus drop to 0?
If it does drop to 0 do the other effects of a 0 Commander kick in eg no activation on a double 1 through 5?

Command
All troops are out of command and thus get the -1 on tests

All troops are out of command radius
The command had no rating so no bonus to the initiative roll but also no negatives or positives due to command ability

I agree with Steve's comments. The big consequence is all troops being out of command. It is interesting that no commander is in some respects better than an Incompetent Commander.

Heh heh.  That's exactly what happened GC.  I was tight for points so took a Poor Commander who of course rolled snakes eyes and went down to incompetent.

We got lucky and killed his Commander in melee, but not "well enough" to break his command.

I suffered a critical failure (ie no activation) on a turn where I really needed to get a pike block moved to handle 3 attacking cavalry units.  Instead they just sat there and awaited a pummelling.  And my HArquebus A T units stood and watched their fellows sitting in the middle of those 3 enemy units rather than providing fire support. We played it as responded above and came to the exact same conclusion, having
no Commander is better than an Incompetent one.

Actually I don't have too much of a problem with that.... a meddling incompetent in charge is often worse than none at all in real life Laughing
