Zama Refight

Post by pw4379 on Mon Nov 16, 2015 6:13 pm

I am looking to re-fight some of the Battles of the Second Punic War and started by having a look at Zama.

In terms of the infantry it seems that both sides deployed in three ranks and that during the battle at various points the lines were exchanged.

I am wondering how this will work under Impetus rules?

Obviously the Roman line relief rule will allow their first two lines to exchange, but what about the third (Tiarii) rank?

For the Carthaginians I was thinking that the first rank might be FL troops so that the second rank might pass through at suitable opening, but I would have thought the second and third ranks would both be FP so not allowing interpenetration.

Also the accounts I have read suggest that the Carthaginian line moved to the sides of the rank behind. Does not seem possible under the rules?

And opening the ranks for elephants?

Of course I understand that a wargame cannot replicate all real life situations but I would be interested in peoples thoughts.

Thanks

I read somewhere that Scipio at Zama adopeted a more linear formation at Zama, streching his front. I know this is not what most reports say, butI like that interpretation.
When playing an historical battle you can create special scenaro rules. You can let the exchange of formation also for the Triarii, while for Elephants Scipio created some corridors screened by Skirmishers.
One option to be stick to the rules could be to form Large Units with Hastati and Principes intemingles by S with Elephants on the rear and allow Triarii with D=A to move sideways and fill the gaps.

Same for Elite Punic foot with D=A that can move sideways.

Zama was refought under several rule sets at a Society of Ancients Battle day back in 2010.

for the briefing about the battle which you might find useful

I like Lorenzo's comments regarding adding special scenario rules for historical refights.

And thanks for the link ot the SoA refights!
