Blocked from pursuit rotation

Post by Granicus Gaugamela on Wed Jan 13, 2016 9:11 pm

Had a new one last night.

Inactive CP has taken losses and is disordered so it had no Impetus nor active ZoC.

Unit of CL closes to within about 1U frontally and shoots. Does a disorder on disorder casualty.

Another CL closes and shoots, same result.

Active player CP is on the flank of the Inactive CP and charges in.

Standard flank melee ensues, with a slightly odd result

As the flanker I rolled zero hits on the dozen or so dice I rolled. Bit of a bugger but that happens.

The inactive unit scores a hit, no big deal, I have a high VBU so I'll get a Disorder and stick. Except of course I roll a 6 and have to retreat.

So be it, just one of those occasions.

Question now is how does the inactive CP follow up (as is mandatory).

The presence of the CL prevent enough of a pivot to face the fleeing active CP so he can't chase down the unit that actually attacked him.

In the end we decided he must still utilise a pursuit move (he is CP after all), so we had him smash into the CL to his front.

But we weren't sure if that was right or not.

Sounds good to me. The winning CP can pivot to conform to the losing CP but it doesn't have to. Since it cannot pivot to conform it must crash forward into the CL. As a side note, our group understands the pivot to conform is an all or nothing option. Either you are able to fully conform to the frontage of the losing side or you don't get to make the free pivot.

By this you mean the pursuing units front edge pivots to sit flush (parallel) to the pushed back units front edge ? ....or it doesn't get to pivot ? .... nice Smile

I thought the pivot was to a position perpendicular to the line drawn between the centre of the two units after the retreat has been carried out. Thus I find rarely are the units parallel to each other after this - they are almost always at an angle when this pursuit option is chosen.

I would agree though that the pivot has to be completed to be carried out.

In reading on Pursuit I think you are correct accard. I guess we have overly simplified the rule since it is easier to simply rotate the pursuing unit to conform to the frontage of retreating unit. But the rule says to rotate to be perpendicular to the imaginary line between the two middle points on the front edge of each base. We will have to modify how we do this. Always learning!!

Still all or nothing but the pivot will generally be smaller than before.

Yep accard is right of course. Thought your groups interpretation Gaius was interesting though.

It is easier to figure out and faster to play for sure Tarty. We are pretty fastidious in playing the rules though. I will see what the other guys think on Sunday.
