Basing Tercios Considerations

Post by Tankred on Thu Apr 14, 2016 3:48 pm

I started to think about base sizes for 15mm and wondered, if you already had some good ideas how to depict an early or late tercio. For sure it makes sense to split them into several parts but what would you suggest? How many parts? Do you go for a copatible sizes for FoG or By Fire and Sword? Do you go for the maximim effect of the 12x12 cm bases for old Tercios?

Maximum effect of 120x120 base packed with troops in appropriate formation.

I'm using 10mm on 15mm bases, so my pike blocks are going to be somewhere between 96 and 144 figures. Tercios will be mixed but still 48 to 72 figures I think.

I have to do some testing as soon as the big package of Pendraken stuff arrives.

Re: Basing Tercios Considerations

Actually I wondered how you would solve the pike to shot ratio and position.

For example: If you arrange pike in the middle and shot flanked you could split the base for 15mm in 4cm width. Then you would have 4 cm shot, 4cm pike, 4cm shot. but that would end with some deeper pike formation. Not sure if I like the outcome.

A good look would probably be that you have 3cm shot, 6cm pike, 3 cm shot, but that cannot be done with a 4x2 cm FOG standard infantry basing.

So what´s your ratio and position for a Tercio?

Forget FoG. rabbit

I just want to have some flexibility when I build up an army. E.g. create early OR late tercio. Have Pike and Shot or Horse and Shot. As described in the rule book for 28mm.

For Zipee and stecal, will you have pikes in the center surrounded by shot or flanked or shot in front backed by pikes. Will you depict musket bastions at the corners? So feel free to share your ideas on how to populate a tercio base.

Re: Basing Tercios Considerations

Post by Zippee on Thu Apr 21, 2016 3:40 pm

Early tercios probably in quincus, large pike centre with 4 corner wings of shot

Late tercios more likely 2 deep wings of shot but with a large pike centre

I need to do some sample layouts to see what looks best and will be aiming for something slightly abstract and generic rather than truly representational but an early tercio will be its own thing and a late tercio will not be half of that - it will be its own base as well.

Bear in mind that with 10mm figs on 120mm bases I can cram a lot of figures in, so have a fair degree of representational lattitude

I made a picture of what I am talking about. This could depict an early Tercio the ratio between Pike and shot is equal and there are four bastions on the corners. I think 4 pikemen per 4cm look way better.

I think it is not too bad and I have the option for other formations, too.

Zipee I totally agree with you that dedicated bases look way better.

Re: Basing Tercios Considerations

Post by Zippee on Wed Apr 27, 2016 4:12 pm

I've roughed up some bases with my sample order of ECW figures from Pendraken (as a consequence of which a much more substantial order was placed)

This is what I came up with:
GA & SP (120x40) - 13 figures in a single shallow V wave
TR (120x40) - 15 figures in a single dense line
RE (120x40) - 18 figures in a double rank, dense and centred
RE MASS (120x80) - 36 figures in a 4 rank deep dense column  [or two normal RE if necessary]
CL (12- x 40) - 8 figures in a dispersed cloud

Pike (120x120) - 144 figures, 12 by 12 (sword or harquebus front rank, 116 pikes with 16 halberds in the centre)
E-TC (120x120) - 96 figures, 48 pikes in the centre in 6 ranks with 4 sleeves of 12 shot in 3 ranks at the corners
L-TC (120x80) - 58 figures, 30 pike in 5 ranks and 2 sleeves of 15 shot in 3 ranks
EP&M (120x40) - 40 figures, 16 pike in 4 ranks, and 2 sleeves of 12 shot in 2 ranks
LP&M (120x40) - 34 figures, 6 pike in 3 ranks, and 2 sleeves of 14 shot in 2 ranks
T (120x40) - 32 figures in 2 ranks
WB (120x40) - 48 figures in 3 rough ranks or mob like clump
S (120x40) - 16 skirmishers in a dispersed 2 deep line
DR (120x40) - 24 dragoons in 2 ranks, centred (no mounts).

I've subsumed command numbers into the above - usually with the pikes.

What figures (brand) do you plan to use?

I thought the clue was in the reference to a substantial order to Pendraken Very Happy

Slightly more definite than plan - some are on the painting block, some are in bags, some (a lot) are in the post.

Ah - literate people are literally better off than me Very Happy

I went through the posts but i mamaged to overlook this line... Embarassed

I once ordered some napoleonic samples from them and they looked really good so when I read your post it came to my mind that maybe they'd be the solution to the 30YW army I fancy for so long now Wink
So curious for some pictures !

Their new Napoleonics (1809 range) are lovely - I've just finished large armies of them. Their best though is probably the LOA range which is lovely indeed, as can be seen here
http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,7622.0.html

For some time the SYW and FIW ranges were their best - you can see them on my Flickr page here
https://www.flickr.com/photos/zippee/sets/

The ECW range seems slightly more slender, lacking the chunky deep undercuts of those ranges but still full of character and are painting up rather nicely.

Must do some photography - I'm soooo far behind Smile

Great range... I've often considered taking the Pendraken road (or cul-de-sac rather for me) but way too committed now however I've always loved their stuff. Your project Zippee should look great look forward to seeing some pics.
Deep in the woods with Napoleonic's also at the moment (AB 15s) often thought down one more scale and it could have been even better Smile

The Pendraken Forum has a number of good "how to's" - these for instance

http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,9636.0.html

http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,9654.0.html

For two very different ways.

Personally I find I paint them similarly to how I paint 15mm - block colours, single bold highlight, a fine wash and if necessary (Austrian white on white for instance) an extra dab of highlight.

Easier than 6mm, faster than 15mm - they are my first choice for all new projects.
