Would Baroque work for the WSS?

Post by Gaius Cassius on Thu May 19, 2016 1:39 pm

Just wondering if the Baroque would work for the War of the Spanish Succession and GNW?

Lorenzo has already said that he is working on an extension to do just that. Probably for one of the magazines IIRC

As it stands it may not be tailor made for WSS but you would certainly get a decent game - a lot depends on how much flavour detail you want to see. you won't see differences in volley techniques brought out for instance but then I tend to think too much emphasis is placed on that anyway.

So if you just want a good game with WSS figures then yes absolutely. If you want more specific flavour then maybe not but as you clearly know what you want in this case, it should be easy to modify Baroque accordingly.

I think it will work well if you assume each unit is a brigade of 6-8 battalions or squadrons.

I don't think that's necessarily required - rather depends on how many units you can put on the table. Clearly with 1 base = a battalion you're not going to fit Blenheim on a 4' x 4' table but I don't think you need to bathtub because of the rules.

I played a bunch of Baroque on 60mm bases with 6mm - it works very handily and that might be a decent way to go to get the bigger battle feel.

I've heard a few people ask this question since Baroque came out. Maybe Lorenzo should think seriously about moving that project (WSS/GNW supplement) up the ladder ? Wouldn't take much it's almost there.

I was thinking of 12cm stands like Impetus with a dozen or so figures on it with each stand being a battalion. Sounds like that could work. I have a 8' by 6' table and at our club we can make larger combinations still.

And that's how I would do it as well* but Stecal clearly felt you needed to up the ante to a base = a brigade.

*Well actually I'd have 30+ figures per base as I do with my ECW and LOA units Smile but yes, each base = a battalion

Ooh nice,

I am a little concerned that the only candidates for natives is WB in Baroque - I do wonder if this will limit it's adaptability for colonial wars, in period that is. Assaye obviously isn't that Smile

There is very definitely a good basic black powder / horse and musket ruleset just bubbling under from Baroque

Actually while you get warband, you can also have sepoys and archers.
You can also give mounted troops a big -SM to cheapen them but they still always roll 1d6 for missile fire, so Pindaris and other similar light horse can be a nuisance but cannot cope with a charge Very Happy

Fair consideration for later India Jim and I think you're on the right track but there are a number of problems if you look at the wider picture of colonial 16th - 18th C.

Let's start at the top - what's an elephant classed as?

actually rockets are a bigger issue. An elephant you can just lift straight from Impetus
Impetus has stuff for Chinese rockets but I don't think they capture the feel

Not saying you can't work something out.

Just that as they are there are a lot of holes when it comes to non Western European warfare

Well with the cavalry there is already a Sipahis class, and the rules are designed to be able to cope with Turks, so we've found the holes aren't as bad as we feared
