Displacement during Pursuit

Post by Gaius Cassius on Mon May 30, 2016 4:28 am

Was wondering if the displacement can occur during pursuit. A CP won a melee against an enemy FP. The FP retreated and the CP rolled sufficient distance to recontact the FP. The only problem was that a friendly FL was in the way of the CP from recontacting the FP. As the CP moves forward does the FL get displaced or does the FL block the CP from moving its full pursuit move. Surprisingly, we hadn't seen this situation before and the rules do not speak specifically to the situation. We decided to allow the FL to displace as a temporary ruling until we had a chance to consult the Forum on the rationale the the rules don't specifically exclude displacement during pursuit.

Not sure what you mean by displace I think you refer to push back?
If the FL is in the way of the CP a new melee will happen between those two units.

But in your example I think the mistake was, that the FP would push back the FL when retrating. In rare occasions the retreat can move in a way that the pursuit crushes in a different unit.

The FL are FRIENDLIES mate.

I'd go with them being placed behind the CP as well. 5.10.2 has been modified by Advanced Impetus p VIII which says "we no longer allow the forward involuntary interpenetration of troops that cannot normally be interpenetrated voluntarily", slightly above on the same page it modifies Voluntary Interpenetration to include FLs being placed behind the interpenetrating unit.

FWIW I concur, the pursuit displaces the FL.

I always place the displaced troops after the move is complete never during, so the FL will be directly behind the CP.

I've seen people who want to displace them at the point of contact moving them safely to the rear - that doesn't seem right to me Smile

My explanation was perhaps a bit sloppy. We only displace at the end of the unit's move. If the moving unit is able to completely exit the unit being interpenetrated then that unit is not displaced.

So in simple terms it seems that the consensus is that the displacement rule apply to pursuits.

Technically I'd say it was the Involuntary Interpenetration rule but the end result is the same in this case.

Don't think I've ever had this one come up before either. Yep I would have gone with displacing the friendly FL as well.

You raise a good point. Is pursuit Voluntary or Involuntary interpenetration? Not that it makes a lot of difference. In the case of most unit types pursuing is a voluntary act and but in the case of warbands, CP etc. it is a required move. How are we to understand pursuit movement?
