everything should be accessible to see, but no changes in the post allowed.
Better to paste and copy here.

Re: Jacobite Rebellions

Post by Guest on Mon Sep 01, 2014 8:06 am

Hey I actually managed to do it- thanks.

I have for some time now been contemplating using the Baroque Rules to fight the Jacobite Rebellions from 1688 to 1746.
It is a period in which I have a great interest but sadly at the moment not an in depth knowledge.
However before I start building up some armies I'd like to see if anyone has helpful comments on a first draft of a possible list.
I have ignored Ireland and the rebellions in Cornwall because my knowledge is too sparse.
All infantry are FP.
I have also got slightly maverick with the rules and listing, a fact of which I'm well aware.

SCOTTISH JACOBITES
6-12 Scottish Highland Clans. [see notes below]
front rank- 6; 5, 3 ; 3 impetuous
rear ranks- P+M ; 5 ;3, 1 ; 2 impetuous MM=0 [see notes]
0-1 French. Irish Brigade - 6 ; 6, 2; 3
0-1 French, Royal Ecossois,- 6 ;6, 2 ; 3
0-1 Manchester Militia, or other North of England Supporters.
5 ; 4 ,1 ; 2
0-2 Scottish or Irish Horse; TR-CP ; 8 ; 6 ,1 ;3 ; point blank pistols
0-2 CL ; 12 ; 3 , 1 ; 1
0-2 Artillery ; Art A; 3 ;1. 0; 1

ENGLISH.
4- 8 Regiments of Foot; 6 ; 6 ,2 ; 3
0-2 Grenadiers ;6 ;6 , 3 ; 4
2-4 Loyal Highland Clans ; [same stats as the Jacobites- see notes below] impetuous.
2-4 Scottish Loyal Lowland Clans ;6 ; 6, 2 ; 3.
0-4 Militia; 5 ;4 ,1 ; 2
0-1 Germans; 6 ; 6 ,2; 3
0-1 TR-CP Cavalry ; 8 ;5, 2; 3 point blank pistols
0-4 English or Ulster Dragoons ; 8 ; 6 ,1 ; 3 muskets
1-3 Artillery; 3 [ early battles 1-0, Culloden 2-0 ] 1; Art A

Notes on Scottish Highland Clans-
Well, first, the title is inaccurate as Lowland Clans also fought for the Jacobites.
The Clans fought with the front rank composed of the Clan leaders, 'gentlemen' and 'tacksmen'. They fought with broadsword, shield [ tange ] ,pistol and dagger. [ OK- That is a generalisation and applies to many but not all]
The rear ranks were composed of tenants, supporters, peasants and some who were pressganged. They were armed with an assortment of weapons including spears , pitchforks, the Lochaber axe and a number of muskets. I've classed them as Pike and Musket. The ratio of muskets varied. At first it would be very low but with time increased considerably with captured English weapons [ eg after the Battle of Preston Pans], and French supplies. I suggest a MM ratio starting at -2 and going up to +1.
I propose that each clan be a large unit with a front rank and at least one rear rank. Casualties are taken from the front rank first. The large unit moves at the rate of its current leading rank. All Clans are impetuous. This reflects the way the Clans actually fought.
No Clan can form a large group with any other Clan but can have artillery attached.

There must be errors I have made so I'd be grateful for suggestions.
V.

look good. A good start for a beta list for Baroque, when out
