You could try putting the terrain in the middle, forcing him into splitting his deployment and using superior mobility to mob one half of his force

You don't have to get so close for CL to be efficient. Stay out of your targets ZoC so that it can't react and shoot with less dice. All you need is a single hit that will cause a disorder even if the target rolls sucessfully for his cohesion test. As you usually have more than one Unit of Cl repeat with the next units and every hit you score will cause the loss of 1 VBU due to accumulated disorder.

Of course this will work less well against other CL but I would expect that.

At point blank he can countercharge a point blank shot and you can't evade in your turn.
